We all want to be healthy and beautiful. However, health, beauty and well-being do not come out of the blue. They can be present in our life only when we live in harmony with ourselves and the surrounding world.

In treating female hair loss, the modern medical science often forgets that the human body is a complex system where everything is interconnected and we cannot treat the part without balancing the whole. Hair loss medication sometimes works (especially minoxidil), other times they are ineffective. However, they rarely address the primary cause which makes our hair to become thinner and fall.

Ancient healing systems (including Ayurveda) have a holistic approach on the dysfunctions of the human body and mind. Diseases can be cured as a result of restoring the person’s mental balance, of improving his/her lifestyle and balancing the energetic flow. According to Ayurveda (translated as ‘the science of life’) each individual has a unique nature, that’s why the hair loss treatment may vary, depending on the exact situation.

As you probably know, in Ayurveda there is the belief that there are three basic ‘doshas’ (the balance between the body-mind constitution) – vata, pitta and kapha. In each person, these elements are blended in a unique way, known as the ‘prakriti’ (or basic nature) of this person. That’s why the Ayurvedic treatment has always an individual approach. Any disease is generally considered an imbalance between one or several ‘doshas’ and the healing is focused into restoring the natural balance.

It is considered that those individuals who have an excess of Pitta dosha are prone to hair loss and their hair becomes grey too soon. Negative factors like stress, improper nutrition (consumption of meats, yeast, sugar, fast-food), excess of alcohol, smoking, intake of medicines, drinking teas and coffee contribute to the increase of the Pitta dosha in the human body.

The ayurvedic treatment of female hair loss combines many elements for restoring the natural balance of the body and mind: meditation, a healthy diet, herbal remedies and oils, correct breathing, yoga and aromatherapy.

The first thing you need to do is identify those habits that contribute to the increase in Pitta dosha and reduce them as much as possible. For this, you will have to do some deeper research and find out which foods, habits and lifestyle aspects are connected to each dosha.

If you got disappointed in all the modern artificial remedies (if you didn’t, you certainly will, in time), and you decided to follow a natural, holistic treatment for your hair loss (for example Ayurveda), then I strongly recommend consulting an experienced specialist. The information that you will find here (or on other blogs) is useful, but it cannot be compared to the deep knowledge of a real healer.

Still, I will try to describe some basic remedies used in Ayurveda hair loss treatment.

Many practitioners of Ayurveda say that aloe vera juice is effective in reducing Pitta. You can use this juice as a part of your female hair loss treatment.

Of course, natural healing systems are always opting for natural, chemicals-free products. That’s why Ayurveda recommends avoiding as much as possible shampoos and conditioners that contain lots of dangerous chemicals – they, as well, increase the Pitta in your body.

When you wash your hair, use warm water – the closer to the natural temperature of the body, the better. Hot water can accelerate hair loss.

After washing your hair, you can rinse it with boiled neem leaves – they stimulate hair growth by healing the follicles and cleaning the scalp.

You can also use different oils for scalp massage: coconut oil, mustard oil, arnica oil, amla oil or brahmi oil. A massage with honey and egg yolk is useful as well. For increasing the rate of hair growth you can use apple cider vinegar – after application, rinse it with water.

Your diet has a paramount importance for your health. Eat as much raw, natural products as possible (especially those that decrease the Pitta dosha).

Physical activity (daily exercises) are fundamental for maintaining your physical and mental health. A static lifestyle will inevitably deteriorate your well-being, lowering your energy levels and contributing to premature aging (hair loss being only one small symptom of this scenario).

Different juices are also effective in treating hair loss in women (and men as well). For example, you can mix lettuce and spinach juice, or you can mix carrot, alfalfa and lettuce juice – these natural remedies can improve the hair growth.

Eating sesame seeds in the morning is another Ayurveda remedy for hair loss.

Don’t forget to drink enough water (clean water, not teas, coffee or sodas!). Water is essential for purifying our body. If we don’t drink enough water, toxins accumulate faster, slowly poisoning our organism, which may lead to hair loss and not only.

Yoga is another fundamental element of the holistic Ayurveda treatment. It has the power of balancing your mind with your body, helping you to become calmer, combating stress and anxiety, improving blood circulation and increasing your energy levels. In the treatment of hair loss, inversion asanas are considered especially effective, because they stimulate the blood flow to the head. Here are some basic asanas you can easily practice every day: downward facing dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana), standing forward bend (Uttanasana), camel pose (Ustrasana), shoulder stand (Sarvangasana) and Vajrasana.

A healthy, balanced lifestyle is the most effective female hair loss treatment. Of course, it requires patience, perseverance and enormous will power, but it is the only way of transforming ourselves and becoming truly healthy, beautiful and happy.
